Türkiye travel guide

An eight-stop Türkiye starter for historic city streets, archaeology, rock landscapes, memorials and the coast. Choose a region first; site tickets, flights and long-distance transfers are separate plans.

Istanbul Sultanahmet streets and visits

Istanbul

UNESCO's Historic Areas of Istanbul, inscribed in 1985, frames the peninsula as a layered Byzantine/Ottoman urban landscape rather than a single attraction: Hagia Sophia's sixth-century architecture, later religious changes, cisterns, palaces and streets have different histories and permissions. Start with Sultanahmet's public streets and choose interiors separately. The Blue Mosque is a working mosque; follow dress, shoes and prayer rules. Hagia Sophia's visitor area, Topkapı Palace and Basilica Cistern have separate current ticket/access/restoration arrangements, with no shared walk-in or free-entry promise here. Guide hours and third-party Hagia Sophia pricing are not a current operator quote. Use the full palace name rather than the distant Topkapı district. Confirm actual visitor category, total currency/price, entrance, closures, prayer constraints, photography and mobility route closer to travel. Historic lanes can be pedestrian-restricted. Waze searches the square, not a door, parking space or drive permission.

Ephesus ruins and Selçuk collections

Aegean coast

UNESCO's 2015 Ephesus inscription explains a port city repeatedly relocated as its shoreline shifted, with the Library of Celsus and Great Theatre surviving from Roman urban life; the Artemis sanctuary and later Christian history are different layers, not all within one gate. The operator says its ancient-city ticket includes the Ephesus Experience Museum, not every Selçuk collection, terrace house or religious site. Its posted regular hours are 08:00–18:00 with box office 17:45; night notices and one-off closures are date-specific. The published 200-lira night ticket is explicitly for Turkish-ID Müzekart holders, not a foreign-visitor price. Confirm current category, ticket total/currency, gate, terrace-house inclusions and last admission closer to travel. Heat, steps and exposed stone need an appropriate route and footwear; no climbing, artifact handling or closed area is included. Selçuk museum/Temple of Artemis/St.John's remain separate. Waze searches the site, not a verified gate.

Cappadocia rock sites and separate flights

Central Anatolia

UNESCO's 1985 Göreme/Rock Sites inscription connects erosion-shaped volcanic landscapes with rock-hewn dwellings, churches and underground settlements, and explains their importance for Byzantine art. That is a way to read the setting, not permission to roam fragile interiors. The regional guide distinguishes Göreme Open-Air Museum, Uçhisar and the underground cities Kaymaklı/Derinkuyu: each requires its own current route, ticket and opening checks. Confirm church/extra-section fees, photography, lighting, stairs, narrow passages, mobility limits and closures closer to travel rather than treating a regional pass or older guide price as all-inclusive. Stay on permitted maintained paths and do not touch frescoes, enter closed caves or finish an unfamiliar rough walk after dark. A ground visit includes no balloon departure; flights need a separate licensed operator, weather, total and cancellation check. Waze searches the museum, not a trail, underground entrance or flight booking.

Pamukkale terraces and Hierapolis

Western Türkiye

UNESCO describes the connection between calcite-rich springs and Pamukkale's terraced basins, beside the Greco-Roman spa city of Hierapolis with baths, theatre and necropolis. Read water, geology and urban history together rather than treating white terraces as unrestricted pools. The operator posts 08:00–18:00, box office 17:00, north/south gates closing 18:00 and pedestrian entry 17:00, plus an antique-pool-open notice. These are planning details to recheck, not assurance of swimming permission, filled pools, every terrace open or inclusive admission. Museum, antique pool, visitor category and actual total/currency require separate confirmation closer to travel. Follow protected-area signs; shoes come off only on the authorised travertine walking section, not all archaeology. Ask about a suitable route, heat and slippery ground; no climbing, artifact removal or closed terrace entry. Waze searches Hierapolis, not a selected gate or swimming booking.

Gallipoli memorials and cemeteries

Gallipoli Peninsula

Gallipoli's 1915 battlefields and memorials require a peninsula route, not one town-centre walk or a single event ticket. The guide separates Helles, the Turkish Martyrs' Memorial, Anzac Cove, Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair. CWGC describes the Chunuk Bair New Zealand Memorial as commemorating soldiers whose graves are unknown and says its cemetery is permanently open; this does not make all museums, roads or ceremonies unrestricted. It warns the cemetery lies on a severe slope below road level, with steps, while the memorial has possible wheelchair entry by the main entrance. Confirm the particular memorial's current access, route, mobility support, ceremony restrictions, road/transport, ferry and any museum fee closer to travel. Inconsistent casualty totals on different page fields are not repeated here. Respect graves, remain on authorised ground and make no night/event-access promise. Waze searches the Martyrs' Memorial, not every battlefield or a commemorative pass.

Ani medieval city ruins

Eastern Türkiye

UNESCO describes Ani's plateau above the ravine forming the Armenian border and its residential, religious and military architecture under successive Christian and Muslim dynasties. It flourished as a Bagratid Armenian capital and Silk Road crossroads in the tenth/eleventh centuries before later political changes, invasion, earthquake and decline. Its 2016 World Heritage inscription is recognition of that history, not a border permit or condition report for each ruin. Treat this as a separate archaeological outing from Kars. Confirm current operator opening, ticket/category/currency, weather, transport, permitted route and security restrictions closer to travel. Avoid unstable ruins, ravine edges, underground tunnels and restricted border areas; no crossing, climbing or structure entry is authorised. Do not photograph military facilities. No ancient trade route becomes a present route recommendation. Waze searches Ani, not a legal crossing or verified walking/parking entrance.

Sümela cliffside monastery

Near Trabzon

The museum operator describes Sümela's cliff setting in the Altındere Valley and rock-church/fresco complex, with substantial medieval development associated with Trabzon's Komnenian rulers. Stories of its earliest founders, the icon and angels are presented as belief/legend, not proven historical events. UNESCO lists Sümela on the state-submitted Tentative List dated 25 February 2000, not as an inscribed World Heritage property. The operator posts 08:00–17:00 with box office 16:30; recheck the actual season/date. The forest/stair approach is not step-free: confirm current restoration areas, narrow stair route, weather, mobility, shuttle/parking access and separate total/category/currency closer to travel. Old guide shuttle/entrance figures are not current quotes. Do not touch frescoes, enter closed sections or infer nearby ruined monasteries are included. Waze searches Sümela, not a step-free door or reserved transfer.

Ölüdeniz lagoon and coastal base

Mediterranean coast

Use Ölüdeniz near Fethiye as a coastal base with distinct lagoon-peninsula and Belceğiz waterfront settings, not a package of every mountain/sea activity. The Turkish government education page describes the nature park as paid for pedestrian and vehicle entry and directs visitors to obtain current fees at the gate; a third-party older free-entry claim is not relied on. Confirm the exact managed beach/site, currency/category/total, opening, parking, facilities and any equipment charge closer to travel. Slippery/rocky surfaces and protected areas need care; calm-looking water does not establish today's swimming safety, lifeguard cover or rescue conditions. No boat, dive or mountain activity is included. Babadağ cable-car/paragliding require separate operator/weather/equipment checks; the Lycian Way is a longer route, not a casual beach transfer. Waze searches the lagoon, not a beach reservation, park fee, safe water entry or flight booking.
