Malta travel guide
An eight-stop Malta starter for prehistoric sites, sandy bays and a separate coastal boat outing. Plan Gozo transport, stair access and controlled-entry visits before combining stops.
Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra park
Southwest Malta
Visit two separate prehistoric temple groups in one archaeological park on Malta's southwest coast. Heritage Malta places Mnajdra about 500 metres downhill from Ħaġar Qim, linked by a footpath; allow for the return climb rather than treating both as one doorway. The visitor centre introduces the sites and some carvings in the temples are copies, with originals displayed elsewhere. The operator says the visitor centre and Ħaġar Qim are accessible with assistance, while Mnajdra is not. Check current admission and the route that suits your mobility. Equinox or sunrise events need their own arrangements. Waze searches the park, not a step-free route.
Ġgantija temples and Gozo transfer
Gozo
Choose Ġgantija for two late-Neolithic structures on Gozo's Xagħra plateau and an interpretation centre with island finds. The temples have separate entrances within a common outer wall; the centre is part of understanding the visit, not merely a ticket stop. Getting to Gozo and reaching Xagħra are separate transport plans from admission. The operator currently lists a combo ticket with Ta' Kola Windmill, so check its exact scope and opening arrangements rather than assuming every Gozo museum is included. Confirm the return island connection before setting out. Waze searches the archaeological park, not a ferry reservation or guaranteed sailing.
Tarxien prehistoric structures
Tarxien
Visit the Ħal Tarxien Prehistoric Complex for four megalithic structures with carved spirals, animals and evidence of later Bronze Age reuse. The outdoor remains are not the same visit as Valletta's National Museum of Archaeology, where vulnerable original finds are kept. Heritage Malta describes a dedicated wheelchair-accessible walkway; check present arrangements for your needs. Tarxien is separate from the underground Hypogeum in Paola. A Hypogeum ticket currently offers a discount only when buying Tarxien admission at the door, not free access or one shared entry slot. Confirm the offer before paying. Waze searches Tarxien's site, not the Hypogeum.
Mellieħa beach and hillside village
Mellieħa
Choose Mellieħa as a northern beach base, keeping the sandy bay visit separate from the hillside village. The village guide also covers the sanctuary, wartime shelters and St Agatha's Tower, each with its own current access arrangements. Do not rely on its older bus routes, prices or opening hours. Check the beach flags, lifeguard advice, jellyfish notices and weather before entering the water; a gradually sloping beach is not a swimming-safety guarantee. Confirm the walk or transport between your accommodation, village and waterfront. Waze searches Mellieħa Bay, not a reserved sunbed or a verified accessible entrance.
Golden Bay beach outing
Northwest Malta
Choose Golden Bay on Malta's northwest coast for a sandy beach outing, not a guaranteed water-sports session. The island guide distinguishes it from adjoining Għajn Tuffieħa and describes beach facilities and activities that still need a current operator check. Watch the flags and follow lifeguard advice; the guide specifically warns about strong currents. Confirm weather, parking or public transport and any equipment charges before leaving. A nearby hotel does not grant access to its facilities, and a beach visit does not book a boat, lesson or lounger. Waze searches Golden Bay, not an available parking space or permission to swim.
Għajn Tuffieħa stair-access bay
Northwest Malta
Choose Għajn Tuffieħa for a different beach from adjoining Golden Bay. The island guide describes a long staircase down to the sand, so plan for the climb back and confirm whether this approach suits your mobility. Do not assume the route is step-free or that facilities match Golden Bay. Check weather, beach flags and local advice before swimming; quieter sand is not proof of safe water. Keep any coastal walk separate from the beach plan and check its route before setting out. The guide's older bus numbers are not a current timetable. Waze searches the bay, not a staircase landing, reserved beach space or safe walking route.
Blue Grotto boat trip or coastal view
South coast
Choose the Blue Grotto caves on Malta's south coast as a separate boat outing from Wied iż-Żurrieq, not an automatic part of a nearby temple visit. The boat-service operator decides whether sea and wind conditions allow trips and describes stopping work in rough southern-wind seas. A published operating schedule does not guarantee a departure that day. Confirm service, boarding assistance, current fare and weather before travelling; ask about suitability if boarding a small boat is difficult for you. A shore view is a different experience from entering the caves by boat. Waze searches Wied iż-Żurrieq, not a sailing or assigned boat seat.
Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum controlled entry
Paola
Plan the underground prehistoric burial complex in Paola around an official entry slot, not an unbooked city walk. Heritage Malta strongly recommends booking early and limits visits to ten people at a time for conservation. Last-minute tickets may be available under separate rules, but are not guaranteed. The operator does not admit children aged one to five and forbids photography on site. Ask about the underground route and your mobility needs before buying. The Sleeping Lady statuette is at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, not inside this visit. Check current availability and ticket conditions. Waze searches the Hypogeum, not an admission booking.
