Italy travel guide

An eight-stop Italy starter for city streets, chosen museum visits, archaeology and coastal or lakeside bases. Pick a region first; city access, timed tickets and longer transfers need separate checks.

Rome streets and separate ancient sites

Rome

Choose a historic-street walk separately from reserved interiors and archaeology. For the Colosseum, the operator's standard Colosseum/Roman Forum/Palatine ticket has a booked Colosseum entry and one Forum-Palatine entry within its stated window. Its listed areas are not a promise of underground or arena access; compare the exact ticket type before buying. The Forum has several entrances, so decide where to start and finish. Vatican museums and other Rome interiors are different visits, not included in this ticket. Check current hours, security rules and your route's mobility needs. Waze searches the Colosseum, not a booked slot or permission to drive historic streets.

Florence streets and chosen art museums

Florence

Start with a walk around Florence's Renaissance centre, then choose the museum you most want to see. The Uffizi Galleries operator lists different tickets for the Uffizi, Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens, along with combined options; none should be treated as admission to every Florence attraction. It currently describes named tickets and an official reservation route. Check visitor names, dates, ticket scope and entry arrangements before buying. The Accademia and cathedral complex need their own access check. Older guide prices are not a current quote. Waze searches the Uffizi, not a reserved entrance or permission to drive restricted city-centre lanes.

Venice canal walks and city access

Venice

Choose Venice's canal-side streets and bridges as a walking visit, with waterbus rides, gondolas and museum interiors planned separately. Bridges and steps can affect mobility, so check the route you need. The city's official access-fee page says the 2026 trial ended and no fee or exemption request applies from 27 July 2026. That does not establish the rules for a later year: check the official calendar for your visit rather than paying an old quoted fee. Accommodation tourist tax is a separate issue. Waze searches Piazzale Roma, a mainland-road arrival area, not a route to drive through the pedestrian historic city or a boat booking.

Pompeii city and suburban-villa scope

Campania

Choose Pompeii's excavated ancient city as a substantial archaeology outing rather than assuming every surrounding site fits the same visit. The operator currently separates an Express ticket for the city from Plus access including suburban villas and a wider multi-site option. Tickets are personal, admissions are capped, and ordinary single-entry tickets do not allow exit and re-entry. Check the exact option, gate, last entry and current building access before paying. The operator says its connecting Artebus shuttle is not equipped for disabled access. Protect against heat and choose a route suited to your mobility. Waze searches Porta Marina, not confirmed parking or admission.

Herculaneum ruins and closed areas

Campania

Visit the archaeological park at Ercolano separately from Pompeii; these are different towns and ticketed sites. Check current entrance, last admission and the walk from transport before setting out. The park currently lists the Villa dei Papiri as closed without a reopening date, and the Ancient Theatre closed until further notice for maintenance. Do not build the visit around either closed area or confuse them with the ordinary ancient-city route. Under-twelve visitors must be accompanied. Special events can be outside normal ticket scope. Ask about a route suited to your mobility. Waze searches the Herculaneum park, not every excavation or an admission booking.

Cinque Terre villages and chosen trails

Liguria

Choose among Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso rather than treating all five as a single easy walk. The national park's trail map marks routes by difficulty and includes closed stretches; recheck the exact path and weather before walking. Its Trekking Card lists access to specified Blue Trail sections and Via dell'Amore, not unrestricted access to every path or a guarantee that a trail is open. Check ticket, entry and any reservation requirements for the stretch you want. Plan footwear, water and return transport, and do not assume a trekking card is a rail ticket. Waze searches Monterosso, not a safe walking route or village parking permit.

Lake Como town and transport choice

Lombardy

Choose a specific Lake Como base, such as Como, Varenna, Bellagio or Menaggio, before combining lakefront walks and villa visits. The guide distinguishes eastern-shore trains from boat connections to other towns; a map distance across water is not a road transfer. Check present ferry or train schedules, the last return and the ticket type for each leg rather than relying on older guide fares. Villa gardens and interiors have separate admissions. Shore roads can be narrow and parking difficult, so confirm the arrival plan before driving. Waze searches Varenna, not a sailing, villa ticket or reserved parking space.

Taormina hillside streets and theatre

Sicily

Choose Taormina's hillside centre on Sicily's east coast for streets, Piazza IX Aprile views and a separate ancient-theatre visit. The Teatro Antico is not the small Roman Odeon visible near the streets, and neither should be confused with the waterfront below town. Check the theatre's current admission and event arrangements before planning entry. Mazzarò and Isola Bella need a separate downhill transfer and return plan; confirm the cable-car service rather than using older guide prices or hours. Hill paths and stairs may not suit every visitor. Waze searches Porta Catania, not permission to drive pedestrian streets or a theatre booking.
