Indonesia travel guide

Eight expanded Indonesia ideas across temples, volcanic landscapes, marine parks, lakes and living traditions. Choose an island or region first; these are not one short itinerary.

Borobudur temple

Central Java

Choose courtyard access or a temple-structure visit before buying: these are different products on the official ticket site. The structure ticket lists a guide, wristband and Upanat temple sandals. Its page labels ground access as domestic-tourist-only, so do not assume every displayed option applies to your passport. Check the current visitor category, timed entry, inclusions and accessibility for your date. Sunrise, sunset and Dagi Hill breakfast are separate products, not benefits of a basic visit. Allow time for ticket checks and preparation, follow the guide and protect the carved reliefs. No climbing slot, sunrise access, ticket price or transport is confirmed.

Prambanan temples

Java

Plan the temple complex rather than treating this as a quick substitute for Borobudur. The official Prambanan ticket page includes Prambanan, Lumbung, Bubrah, Sewu and the museum; check which parts are actually accessible on your date and choose a manageable walking route. Its courtyard description is not permission to enter every structure or climb restricted areas. Ramayana Ballet and Ratu Boko appear as separate products on the operator's site, so confirm their tickets and locations separately. Bring suitable sun and rain protection and ask about mobility access before choosing. No performance, temple interior, current opening time, admission price or transfer is arranged.

Bromo volcanic scenery

East Java

Treat this as volcanic-landscape planning, not a promised crater ascent. The national park's current portal tells visitors not to enter within one kilometre of Bromo's crater, following PVMBG guidance. Obey the exclusion zone even if an operator offers a closer approach. August and September 2026 fire closures appear in news reports; ANTARA later reported a 19 September reopening, which does not confirm today's routes. Check park notices, volcano alerts, weather and fire restrictions again before booking. Choose permitted viewpoints and clarify the exact vehicle route, fitness needs and cancellation terms. No crater access, sunrise view, jeep, ticket or safe operating conditions are confirmed.

Bunaken diving

North Sulawesi

Choose a dive or a surface visit first, then match the site to your training and actual sea conditions. Official tourism describes Bunaken's reef walls and sites such as Lekuan, Mandolin and Fukui Point; its calm-water and wildlife descriptions are not a safety assessment or a sighting guarantee. Ask a qualified operator about certification, current, depth, equipment checks, emergency oxygen and evacuation arrangements. U.S. guidance warns that diving regulation is limited and specialist treatment is available only in limited locations. Do not touch coral or feed fish. Check the departure harbour and boat safety separately. No dive, equipment, transfer, visibility or turtle encounter is confirmed.

Komodo National Park

East Nusa Tenggara

Choose ranger-led land wildlife viewing, a Padar viewpoint or a marine activity as separate outings. Official tourism distinguishes Komodo, Rinca and Padar; one boat itinerary need not include all three. The park protocol requires entry and activity tickets, obedience to guides, permitted trails and timed visits. It prohibits touching or approaching wildlife too closely, feeding animals, uncertified diving, littering and collecting coral or sand. Strong currents make the sea a separate assessment: ask about the vessel, life jackets, diver limits and weather cancellation. Drone use needs permission. No dragon or manta sighting, island landing, ranger, permit or sailing is arranged.

Lake Toba

North Sumatra

Choose a lakeside base or Samosir Island before combining sights. Official tourism describes Tuk Tuk for village walking, Tomok's traditional houses, Ulos textiles and Batak cultural traditions. These are distinct leads, not one guaranteed cultural performance. Treat Sigale-gale stories as local belief and folklore rather than literal fact. Flight and road routes on the destination page are planning leads, not current schedules or reliable journey times. Check transfers, road conditions and boat safety directly; a lake-view visit is not permission for an unassessed long kayak crossing. Respect homes and ask before photographing people. No ferry, flight, kayak, event, accommodation or access is confirmed.

Lombok & Gili islands

West Nusa Tenggara

Pick the island that suits your pace. Official tourism describes Trawangan as the busiest of this three-island group, Meno as quieter and smaller, and Air as nearer Lombok's mainland. Other islands around Lombok also use the name Gili, so verify the exact destination and harbour. The tourism page's ferry times are not live departures. Check the vessel, life jackets, sea forecast and cancellation policy before crossing; leave room for disruption before an onward flight. Walking and cycling are useful island leads, while snorkelling and diving need separate condition and operator checks. No turtle sighting, boat, dive, room or transfer time is guaranteed.

Tana Toraja highlands

South Sulawesi

Choose architecture, village landscapes or a permitted burial-site visit with local guidance. Official tourism describes Tongkonan family houses, Lemo and Lokomata rock graves, and Londa burial caves. These are living communities and sacred places, not freely accessible exhibits. Ask locally about entry, dress, photography and which areas are private; do not touch remains or enter homes without permission. Rambu Solo is a family funeral rite, not an on-demand tourist show, and attendance needs an invitation or clear local consent. Plan your base around Rantepao or Makale and check current transport rather than copying promotional journey times. No ceremony, guide, cave access or transport is arranged.
