Greece travel guide

An eight-stop Greece starter for ancient sites, medieval streets, working monasteries and island viewpoints. Choose a region first; museums, site tickets and island transfers are separate plans.

Athens Acropolis and separate museum

Athens

Choose the Acropolis archaeological site for the Parthenon and other ancient monuments, then plan the Acropolis Museum separately. The museum explicitly says its ticket is independent of the hilltop site and other archaeological sites. Plaka and Monastiraki streets are another kind of visit, not admission to ruins. Check current entry arrangements, restoration areas, weather and a route suited to your mobility. At the museum, no flash or tripod is allowed and the Archaic Acropolis Gallery has no photography. Waze searches the museum, not an Acropolis entrance or a timed ticket.

Knossos ruins and Heraklion collections

Crete

Choose the Palace of Knossos outside central Heraklion, then plan the city archaeological museum separately for Minoan finds. The guide distinguishes the palace remains and reconstructions from the museum collection; the Minotaur story is mythology, not evidence of an intact labyrinth to explore. Check current tickets, site access, heat and any guided-tour arrangements with the official heritage service. Older combined-ticket prices and bus listings are not today's offer. Heraklion's Venetian walls and harbour fortress are separate stops. Waze searches Knossos, not a museum ticket or guaranteed parking.

Rhodes medieval town and museums

Rhodes

Explore the walled old town and Street of the Knights, then choose the Palace of the Grand Master or Archaeological Museum separately. The island guide distinguishes these heritage visits from Lindos, castle ruins and inland outings elsewhere on Rhodes. A street walk does not include palace rooms, a museum ticket or transport across the island. Confirm current visitor access, exhibitions, admission and church rules before entering. Wear shoes suited to uneven historic streets. Beaches and boat trips need their own conditions checks. Waze searches the palace, not permission to drive pedestrian lanes.

Delphi sanctuary and museum

Central Greece

Plan the archaeological site around the Temple of Apollo, ancient theatre and stadium, then check the museum separately. The guide also identifies the Sanctuary of Athena with the Tholos as a distinct stop. Choose which areas you want before arranging transport; Thermopylae is another trip, not part of the same site. Confirm current ticket scope, opening, last entry and path access rather than relying on old prices or hours. Sloping outdoor ruins need weather protection and a route suited to your mobility. Waze searches Delphi's archaeological site, not a ticket or verified entrance.

Meteora individual monastery visits

Thessaly

Choose one monastery and check its own visitor rules before setting out from Kalambaka or Kastraki. The guide distinguishes six working monasteries with separate schedules, dress requirements and steep approaches; a scenic road visit is not admission to all six. Ask about covered shoulders, trousers or skirt requirements and photography restrictions in church interiors. Many approaches involve substantial steps, so confirm suitability rather than assuming step-free access. Check present opening, weather and transport; climbing or remote hiking needs a separate plan. Waze searches Great Meteoron, not a cleared walking route or monastery reservation.

Olympia ancient sanctuary

Peloponnese

Choose the archaeological site of Olympia in the Peloponnese for the sanctuary associated with the ancient Olympic Games. This is not Mount Olympus or a modern Olympic stadium. The guide describes an open-air site visited on foot, so plan sun or rain protection and check current accessible routes. Museums and any guided interpretation need their own opening, admission and ticket-scope checks. A site visit does not guarantee a torch-lighting ceremony or sporting event. Confirm present entry arrangements with the official heritage service. Waze searches the archaeological site, not a ceremony ticket or guaranteed parking.

Santorini villages and separate archaeology

Cyclades

Choose Fira, Imerovigli or Oia for village streets and caldera views, then plan museums or Akrotiri archaeology separately. These are different parts of the island, not one short walk. The official Hellenic Heritage site currently lists Ancient Thera as closed, so do not plan entry there from an older guide. Check the latest site notices, local transport, weather and steps before setting out; sunset crowds and cliffside lanes need care. No roof access, safe swimming, volcano boat departure or unobstructed sunset is promised. Waze searches Fira, not a viewpoint reservation or island transfer.

Corfu old town and fortifications

Ionian Islands

Choose Corfu's old town for a historic port-city walk, then plan individual fortress or museum visits separately. UNESCO describes the fortified urban ensemble, Venetian-origin defences and mainly neoclassical housing shaped by later periods. World Heritage status does not mean every building is open or covered by one admission. Check current access, exhibitions, tickets and a walking route suited to your mobility. Palace gardens and other island destinations require their own transport and visitor checks; a waterfront walk is not a swimming recommendation. Waze searches the Old Fortress, not every heritage site or guaranteed parking.
