Gambia travel guide
Eight expanded history, craft and habitat leads around Banjul and the coast. Museum reports and reserve descriptions help you choose a region; they do not confirm opening, guides, crossings or animal encounters.
Gambia National Museum
Banjul
Start with the National Museum's material-culture collections and the history of its building, rather than assuming a particular gallery is open. NCAC records the museum's opening in 1985 and describes the Banjul building's earlier roles as the Bathurst Club, British Council, Legislative Assembly and National Library. Those changing uses offer a useful way into colonial and post-independence history. The community guide lists hours and an April 2026 fee, but neither is a museum-confirmed rate for your visit. Ask NCAC which collections, interpretation and visitor areas are available, and whether photography is permitted. No ticket, current exhibition or guided visit has been arranged.
Arch 22 heritage
Banjul
Research Arch 22 as both a Banjul landmark and a museum lead. NCAC's heritage page describes its satellite museum through displays on marabouts, jujus and Gambian chieftaincy, while Wikivoyage calls it a textile museum and describes views over the city. Those differing descriptions should not become a promise of a specific display. Ask which museum rooms and viewing areas are operating, what the exhibition covers and whether stairs or lifts are usable. Keep the monument's visitor access separate from the collections you want to see. Do not assume a tower climb is open, safe or step-free from a travel listing. No admission, ascent or tour is confirmed.
Albert Market craft traditions
Banjul
Use Albert Market to understand everyday trade as well as souvenir craft. Access Gambia locates it on Liberation Avenue and distinguishes household and retail goods, fresh produce, and tourist craft stalls; fabrics and carved wooden items sit alongside working food and hardware businesses. Choose the section that interests you instead of treating every stall as a curated artisan workshop. Go in daylight with a trusted local guide, agree any guiding fee beforehand and ask vendors before taking photographs. FCDO warns about petty theft in markets and crowded places, so keep valuables out of sight. Directory hours are not a guarantee that a particular trader will be present. No workshop, purchase or guide is booked.
Abuko forest habitat
Near Lamin
Abuko's interest is the gallery forest following the Lamin stream and pools, with adjoining savannah habitats. The environment ministry explains that this evergreen forest depends on surface water rather than rainfall alone. Its page describes an education centre and photo hides overlooking pools, but does not establish their condition or visitor opening today. The same page gives conflicting reserve-area figures, so no precise area is asserted here. Ask park staff about authorised paths, a qualified guide, fees and current wet-weather access. Observe birds and other wildlife from a distance, stay away from crocodile pools and do not feed animals. No hide access, animal-orphanage visit or wildlife encounter is confirmed.
Tanji bird habitat
West Coast Region
Tanji River Bird Reserve, also called Karinti, combines estuary, mangrove, coastal dune scrub and woodland; the offshore Bijol Islands are part of its conservation story. The ministry describes the reserve's importance for resident and migrating birds and turtle breeding, with some bird-count evidence dating to 2000-2004. That history is not a live census or a promise of nesting animals during your visit. Choose authorised mainland observation with a qualified bird guide, and check tides, weather, seasonal restrictions and disturbance rules. Do not turn the islands' low-tide connection to each other into a safe walking route from the mainland. No boat crossing, turtle watch, permit or particular sighting is arranged.
Tanji Village Museum
Tanji
Tanji Village Museum offers a cultural contrast to the bird reserve, rather than another wildlife stop. My Gambia's August 2022 report describes a privately founded museum established by former National Museum curator Abdoulie Bayo in 1997. It records natural-history and ethnographic galleries, musical instruments, food and crop displays, and an open-air Mandinka compound with roundhouses, furniture and farm tools. Temporary crafts included weaving and tie-dye. Use those as questions about what remains on display, not a guarantee of a demonstration or performance today. Confirm the museum entrance, visitor hours, current exhibits and photography consent directly. No musician, craft session or admission is booked.
Kachikally museum heritage
Bakau
Approach Kachikally through its museum and sacred-site heritage in Bakau, not a crocodile-contact experience. NCAC identifies the community museum among those it helped develop. A February 2020 tourism-board article hosted by ATTA describes a museum opened in 2004, with crafts, music, agriculture, initiation and traditional-medicine objects in round huts. Those are dated collection descriptions, not proof every object is on view. Ask the custodians about present museum access, interpretation and respectful photography; beliefs about the pool are cultural traditions, not medical evidence. Stay well away from crocodiles and refuse touching or feeding opportunities, even if a tour advertises them. No close animal encounter or visit is confirmed.
Bijilo forest research
Near Kololi
Bijilo, often called Monkey Park, is a coastal woodland and nature-trail lead near Kololi. Access Gambia describes forest, scrub and dune habitats and specifically asks visitors not to feed monkeys because it changes their behaviour. This is a better boundary than the community guide's suggestion to use peanuts for photographs. Anadolu's March 2025 report records green, patas and red colobus monkeys and pressures from urban development. The Standard reported a partial degazetting in December 2024, so older area figures and route maps are not assumed to show today's boundary. Check the current gate, permitted trails, guide and access conditions with staff. Keep food packed away; no monkey approach, feeding or sighting is promised.
