Ghana travel guide

Eight expanded museum, remembrance, textile and habitat leads around Accra, Aburi and the Central Region. Choose a region and a type of visit first; descriptions do not confirm tickets, tours, canopy access or wildlife encounters.

National Museum collections

Accra

Use the National Museum to connect objects with Ghana's history, rather than assuming one display tells the whole story. GMMB describes three galleries on the past, traditions, and arts and culture, with textiles, musical instruments, gold-weights, pottery and Asante stools among its collections. It also lists objects from other African countries, so ask which material is Ghanaian and which belongs to wider regional exchange. The museum opened in March 1957, on the eve of independence. Confirm which galleries and sculpture-garden areas are available and whether a guide and photography are permitted. GMMB's fee table was reviewed in July 2023; it is not used as a current quote. No admission or tour is arranged.

Kwame Nkrumah memorial

Accra

Choose the memorial for independence history and Nkrumah's Pan-African ideas, with time for reflection rather than a quick monument photograph. The park's own mission includes preserving his life, works and ideals through a museum, library, guided tours and events. The ministry describes collecting and conserving his personal relics and organising independence re-enactments and wreath-laying ceremonies. Those programmes are context, not an event schedule for your visit. The park website lists the museum, mausoleum, declaration ground and audiovisual tunnel as separate facilities. Ask which are operating, what your ticket covers and whether photography is allowed inside. No ceremony, museum slot or guided tour is booked.

Cape Coast Castle remembrance

Cape Coast

Visit Cape Coast Castle as a place of remembrance for the transatlantic slave trade. UNESCO includes it within a coastal group of forts and castles that links the region to centuries of trading and forced migration. Ghana's tourism authority describes dungeons, defensive structures and the West African Historical Museum, whose collection includes shackles, pottery and ceremonial drums. Allow time for difficult historical material and ask an official guide to distinguish documented history from interpretation. The tourism page gives inconsistent British-capture years, so no exact capture date is asserted here. Confirm present visitor routes, museum access and photography rules with GMMB. No admission, dungeon access or tour is confirmed.

Elmina Castle history

Elmina

Elmina is a separate historical visit, not another name for Cape Coast Castle. GMMB records St. George's Castle as founded by the Portuguese in 1482, taken by the Dutch in 1637 and later ceded to the British in 1872. Its use changed from a coastal trading post into a centre tied to enslavement; later uses included training and schooling before its museum role. UNESCO includes it in the same serial coastal property as Cape Coast. Use an official guide and keep the people subjected to forced migration at the centre of the visit. Confirm which rooms and viewpoints are permitted, and do not treat a nearby harbour as a swimming stop. GMMB's July 2023 fee table is not a current quote. No ticket or tour is arranged.

Kakum rainforest research

Central Region

Kakum offers rainforest interpretation as well as its elevated canopy bridges. Ghana Heritage Conservation Trust describes guided nature walks and separate canopy, tree-house and camping options; choose the experience rather than assuming all are included in an entrance ticket. The ministry notes that forest-elephant and other mammal viewing is difficult, so a species list is not a sighting promise. Published walkway lengths and heights vary between the ministry and the park description; those figures do not establish today's operating condition or suitability. Ask staff about authorised routes, weather, guide availability and any age, health or height restrictions before choosing an elevated walk. No bridge crossing, night walk, tree-house stay or wildlife encounter is booked.

Aburi botanical gardens

Aburi

Use Aburi for a plant-history visit rather than treating it only as a picnic lawn. The community reference traces the gardens to March 1890 and describes their role in cocoa seedlings, agricultural teaching and later rubber cultivation. Tree collections and environmental education offer questions for a garden guide, not a guarantee that every named specimen or service is available. A May 2025 Citi News first-person report raised concerns about seating, toilets, vendor charges and storm-damaged trees. That dated account is not a current inspection, but it makes checking maintenance and permitted paths worthwhile. Ask staff about safe areas, visitor facilities and official charges, and avoid exposed trees in storms. No picnic rental, guide or admission is arranged.

Makola market textiles

Accra

Makola is a working central-Accra market, useful for understanding textile trade rather than a staged craft demonstration. Wikivoyage's August 2020 description records fabric shops across a boulevard and alleys, including wax prints and embroidered or beaded cotton and tulle. Treat those as types to ask about, not proof of a particular maker, origin, stock or today's stall layout. A textile sold here is not automatically handwoven kente or an artisan-made souvenir. Visit in daylight with a trusted local guide, agree any fee and ask traders before photographing them. FCDO warns that pickpocketing and bag-snatching are increasing in Accra; keep valuables and cash out of sight. No workshop, purchase or guide is booked.

Shai Hills habitat research

Near Accra

Shai Hills combines open grassland, scattered trees and rocky hills with a cultural history as well as wildlife habitat. The Forestry Commission names kob, green and spot-nose monkeys and olive baboons, and describes caves including Hieowayo, Manya, Adwuku and Sayou. It connects those caves to the Shai people, displaced by the British colonial army in 1892. Ask an authorised reserve guide to explain that history and select a permitted walk suited to heat, fitness and conditions. Named caves and climbing routes on a tourism page are not permission to enter or scramble. Keep food packed away and observe animals from a distance. No cave entry, climbing route, campsite, guide or wildlife sighting is confirmed.
