Ethiopia travel guide
Eight expanded Addis Ababa research leads, not a nationwide itinerary or a safety clearance. Check regional advice and current access before choosing any city visit; closures, worship, campus permissions and transport remain separate decisions.
National Museum research
Addis Ababa
Use this as archaeology and art research, not a promise that Lucy or any particular gallery is on view. Wikivoyage's museum listing, updated October 2024, describes a replica of Lucy alongside sculptures, clothing and traditional and modern art, but says much of the museum is under renovation and closed. A newer independent guide advertises open galleries and daily hours without resolving that closure. Confirm the actual public entrance, available rooms and any temporary relocation directly before making the journey. A fossil replica is not the original specimen. The Ethiopian Museums Support Association describes the museum's preservation, research and education role; it does not establish today's opening. Ask about camera rules, accessible routes, a qualified guide and the final ticket conditions. Do not copy old fees, walking times or a multi-museum itinerary as current logistics. No visit, transport or access is arranged.
Ethnological Museum
Addis Ababa
Research the IES Ethnological Museum's cultural collections and its former imperial-palace setting at Addis Ababa University's Sidist Kilo campus. Clothing, tools, instruments and household objects can offer context for different communities, but no exhibition speaks for all of Ethiopia. Politecnico di Torino's 9 October 2026 report describes an 8 October seminar launching the tender process for the first phase of Guenete Leul Palace restoration and museum renovation. This is a project milestone, not confirmation of a closure, reopening or completed visitor tower. Its proposed passages, storage display and viewing tower must not be treated as existing attractions. Check campus entry, identification, which galleries are accessible, current work zones and curator or guide availability directly. Older community-guide opening times, ticket amounts and bedroom access are not carried forward. No university permission, tour or ticket is arranged.
Addis Ababa city museum
Near Meskel Square
Research Addis Ababa's development through the city museum rather than confuse it with the National Museum or the National Palace. The discoveraddis.gov.et page describes the former residence of Ras Birru near Meskel Square, built in the 1920s, and exhibits of early-city photographs, relics, costumes and the Menelik II and Taitu era. Treat this as the page's collection description, not a guarantee that every display remains accessible. Confirm the current building entrance, exhibition scope, opening, staff interpretation and conservation restrictions; Wikivoyage's older split-session hours are not a live schedule. FCDO specifically names Meskel Square among Addis areas with increased reported crime, so a convenient-looking map location is not an invitation to walk there alone. Arrange trusted daytime transport and a confirmed return plan. No museum entry, guide, transfer or safety assurance is supplied.
Red Terror memorial history
Addis Ababa
Research the Red Terror Martyrs' Memorial Museum as a place of remembrance for victims of the Derg, not a quick attraction to tick off between shopping stops. Wikivoyage describes its opening in 2010 and powerful displays, but the listing's January 2020 update includes an account of poor lighting during a 2019 visit. Neither that condition nor its daily hours and donation model establish today's operation. Ask directly whether the museum is open, which rooms are accessible, how staff interpret the material and whether photographs are allowed. Expect difficult accounts of state violence and allow time to pause or leave; do not impose the guide's brief suggested visit on a memorial. Respect other visitors and staff. The Meskel Square setting needs the same current crime and transport checks as the city museum. No donation, visit, permission or escorted route is arranged.
St Georges Cathedral heritage
Addis Ababa
Research St George's octagonal cathedral and its Adwa-era history near Menelik Square with an authorised local guide. Wikivoyage's January 2020 listing describes paintings and mosaics, plus a nearby museum of ceremonial clothes and manuscripts; it says cathedral entry requires a guide. That is a reason to verify current visitor arrangements, not assume an entrance is open or a stranger outside can grant permission. Worshippers may pray around the walls, so keep space, dress conservatively and follow clergy and staff instructions. The old listing prohibits museum photography and allows non-flash cathedral photography, but ask for today's rules before taking any picture. Confirm whether the museum and church have separate admission, which interiors are available and the final guide terms. Old price figures and split-session hours are omitted. No religious-space access, guide, fee or transport is confirmed.
Holy Trinity Cathedral
Addis Ababa
Research Holy Trinity's church architecture, imperial tombs and memorial grounds around Arat Kilo without treating it as an unrestricted museum complex. The Ethiopian Museums Support Association locates its cathedral museum beside parliament; Wikivoyage describes Haile Selassie's burial and the surrounding cemetery. A September 2026 driver-company guide discusses stained glass, murals and separate museum arrangements, but is not the church's own timetable or proof that restoration work has finished. Confirm current entry, open interiors, worship times, fee coverage and any conservation closure with authorised staff. Cover shoulders and knees, follow shoe-removal instructions and never photograph worshippers without permission. Keep away from clergy-only sanctuaries, government and military areas; the vendor warns about a government-compound no-photo zone. Neither old guide hours nor an advertised combined day tour confirms access. No ticket, driver or visit is arranged.
Entoto landscape research
Northern Addis Ababa
Keep Entoto as a landscape-research lead, not a casual solo hike from the city. Wikivoyage describes mountain viewpoints above Addis and places Shiro Meda at the foot of hills reaching around 3,300 metres. A view depends on weather, and altitude, steep gradients and the descent need planning even for a short outing. More importantly, FCDO names Entoto and Yeka Hills among areas with increased reported crime, including knifepoint robberies and victims being choked unconscious. It advises avoiding solo travel where possible and considering road transport. A guide or daylight does not eliminate that risk. Only consider a specific permitted route after current local security, weather, access, fitness and trusted transport checks; do not improvise a woodland shortcut or assume a park listing provides rescue support. Confirm any church or museum entry separately. No hiking route, summit, guide or transport is recommended as safe or arranged.
Shiro Meda textile crafts
Addis Ababa
Research Shiro Meda's textiles and craftwork in its northern-city trading setting rather than assume every stall is a souvenir shop. Wikivoyage describes locally made fabrics, pots and other crafts near the foot of Entoto, but does not verify today's traders, stock, hours or price. Ask makers or sellers about the fabric, weaving, origin, care and whether an item is locally made; appearance alone cannot establish authenticity. Ask before photographing people and avoid blocking working stalls or private spaces. Protect valuables and choose a trusted daytime transport plan rather than copy the community guide's scenic walking narrative past diplomatic and government sites. FCDO's nearby Entoto crime warning and national restrictions on photographs near military zones, military personnel, the Presidential Palace and prohibition signs still matter. Bargaining advice is not authority to buy. No seller contact, purchase, payment, export clearance or visit is arranged.
