Botswana travel guide
Eight wetland, wildlife and heritage leads across Botswana. Choose a region and an authorised operator first; water levels, rain and remote logistics matter more than a fixed sightings checklist.
Okavango Delta wetland learning and guided waterways
Northern Botswana
Read the Delta as a changing mosaic of channels, lagoons, islands, seasonal marshes and drylands, not one fixed boat route. Botswana Tourism distinguishes the Panhandle, Delta and drylands and traces the river to the Angolan highlands. Water and food availability affect wildlife movement; a species list is not a sightings promise. Choose a camp or operator for the particular habitat and activity you want, then confirm current water levels, transfers and authorised access. Mokoro, motorboat, walking and vehicle outings need separate guide, equipment and emergency checks. FCDO says not to bathe in rivers or lakes. No canoe departure, wildlife encounter or remote crossing is included.
Moremi floodplain habitats and community conservation
Okavango region
Moremi adds a conservation-history layer to a Delta visit. Botswana Tourism describes the Batawana community's initiative to establish the reserve in 1963, responding to wildlife depletion from hunting and cattle encroachment. Its central and eastern Okavango landscapes include the Moremi Tongue, Chief's Island, seasonal floodplains, woodland and lagoons. Choose a specific permitted wildlife-viewing area with a reputable guide; the tourism page's campsite and self-drive descriptions do not prove current availability or passable tracks. Confirm entry, camp reservations, suitable vehicle, water, fuel and emergency communications. Follow wardens' instructions and keep a safe distance from animals. No campsite, track crossing or particular species is guaranteed.
Chobe riverfront habitats and guided wildlife viewing
Kasane region
Distinguish Chobe's riverfront from its Ngwezumba pans, Savute and Linyanti areas instead of treating the park as one quick outing from Kasane. Botswana Tourism describes floodplains, swamps and woodland, with elephants and buffalo gathering near river water in dry periods. Those seasonal patterns are not a forecast or a promise of close encounters. Compare a permitted game drive with a separately checked river trip; each needs its own operator, entry arrangement, equipment and emergency plan. Confirm roads and water conditions directly and follow wardens' advice. Do not leave a vehicle or approach animals on the strength of a photograph. No river swimming, boat departure or remote transfer is suggested.
Tsodilo rock art and living sacred heritage
Northwest Botswana
Tsodilo is a sacred cultural landscape for San and Hambukushu communities as well as an archaeological site. UNESCO describes thousands of paintings and an archaeological record extending over at least 100,000 years, while noting that occupation was not continuous and painting dates are not all settled. Use an authorised local guide to separate evidence, interpretation and living traditions. Tourism lists named trails and a museum, but those listings are not current opening or route permission. Confirm the appropriate circuit, heat, walking demands, transport and community rules. Do not touch paintings, climb for a closer view or collect objects. Ask before photographing people; no ceremony or performance is included.
Makgadikgadi pan landscapes and seasonal ecology
Northeast Botswana
Think of Makgadikgadi as a system of pans, grassland fringes and rocky islands rather than one uniform salt flat. Botswana Tourism distinguishes Sowa and Ntwetwe and explains how good rains can turn dry surfaces into broad shallow lakes, with wildlife using surrounding grasslands and waterbirds gathering where conditions suit. This is ecological context, not a flamingo or migration guarantee. Select a defined guided outing and confirm the exact land manager, access and surface conditions. Wet ground and isolation can make an apparently simple drive unsafe. Arrange water, fuel, navigation, communications and a recovery plan. No independent pan crossing, camping permission or unrestricted island visit is implied.
Nxai Pan grasslands and rain-dependent wildlife
Northern Botswana
Nxai Pan's former salt-lake beds include grassed pans and acacia islands, so this is a different landscape from a bare salt-surface outing. Botswana Tourism says wildlife viewing depends on rain and migration, with artificial water points supplementing natural water. A suggested season is not a current rainfall report or sightings guarantee. Its page also discusses Nata Bird Sanctuary; that is a separate place, not an included Nxai visitor zone. Keep those destinations and entry arrangements distinct. Confirm park permits, current tracks, guide, suitable vehicle, water, fuel and emergency plans before travel. Stay on authorised routes and follow animal-safety instructions. No waterhole stop or campsite is reserved.
Central Kalahari grasslands and remote guided research
Central Botswana
The Central Kalahari is a remote reserve of grasslands, sandveld, pans and fossil river valleys, not simply empty desert. Botswana Tourism describes how good summer rain changes grazing conditions in its northern areas and identifies Deception Valley as one research lead. That account is not proof that any gate, camp or connecting track is open now. Choose an experienced operator and a specific authorised plan; confirm permits, accommodation, water, fuel, vehicle recovery and satellite communications. FCDO advises arranging remote transport and accommodation in advance and seeking local security advice. San heritage needs community-led interpretation and consent, not an assumed cultural performance. No independent wilderness crossing or community access is included.
Three Dikgosi Monument and diplomatic history
Gaborone
Use the bronze monument as an entry into Khama III, Sebele I and Bathoen I's 1895 journey to Britain to oppose transfer of their lands to the British South Africa Company. Botswana's government news report places it in the newer central business district and dates its inauguration to 2005. Those historical facts do not establish today's tours or visitor hours. The Contested Histories study also notes debate over the choice of overseas sculptors and whose national story the monument represents. Ask for that wider context rather than reading the figures as a complete history of Botswana. Confirm current access and trusted transport; keep valuables discreet and ask before photographing people. No guide appointment or museum visit is included.
