Bahamas travel guide

Eight heritage, art and conservation leads across separate island bases. Start with one island and verify transfers independently; these are not a single short itinerary. Andros Blue Holes remains research-only while its published closure is unresolved.

Nassau history at the Queen's Staircase

New Providence

Use the Queen's Staircase as a focused Nassau heritage lead, not as a verified walking circuit across the city. The official tourism page explains that enslaved people cut the limestone passage in 1793-1794 to link Fort Fincastle with Nassau; its later name honours Queen Victoria. Read that history alongside the landscape rather than treating it only as a photo backdrop. The staircase and a fort interior are separate visits. Check current access, steps, surface and your mobility needs before going; this card does not establish a step-free route. Plan daylight transport around current local advice. FCDO warns of violent crime in tourist as well as residential areas and advises against walking outside the main tourist areas and beaches. No guide, admission, fort tour or connected city walk is included.

Eleuthera native plants at the Leon Levy Preserve

Eleuthera

For a defined land-based Eleuthera lead, choose the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve near Governor's Harbour. Bahamas National Trust describes a botanic garden conserving native and endemic plants and interpreting Bahamian vegetation and traditional bush medicine. This is cultural and botanical interpretation, not a medical recommendation or permission to pick or taste plants. The operator lists a mangrove boardwalk, freshwater wetland and Ethan's Tower as distinct features; ask which paths are open and suitable for your access needs. A tower climb is not assumed. Confirm current admission, surface, weather and return transport before visiting. Eleuthera is a separate island plan, not an extension of a Nassau walk. No beach swim, Glass Window Bridge stop, ferry or guided departure is included.

Harbour Island architecture in Dunmore Town

Harbour Island

Use Dunmore Town's clapboard-house streets as an architectural lead, keeping Harbour Island distinct from the much longer island of Eleuthera. The official island guide describes New England-style architecture, colourful houses and the town's coastal setting. A pictured home is not public property: view buildings from permitted streets, respect residents and ask before entering a courtyard or photographing people. Choose a daylight area with local advice and check today's onward and return transport. The tourism page's short ferry description is not a current timetable, last-boat time or weather guarantee. Confirm the actual landing, operator and service before crossing. Pink Sand Beach, riding and boat trips are separate plans; this card includes no swimming approval, property access or guaranteed island transfer.

Andros Blue Holes research while closure is unresolved

Andros

Treat Blue Holes National Park as a conservation research lead, not a current outing. Bahamas National Trust's page fetched on 12 October 2026 explicitly lists the park as temporarily closed, even though other sections describe trails and promote jumping into Captain Bill's Blue Hole. Reopening has not been established here; do not follow those older recreation descriptions as permission to enter. The park protects inland blue holes and surrounding coppice and pine forest, with habitat for the Bahama Oriole and other birds. Read about the limestone and forest ecology, then confirm present status with the Trust before making an Andros plan. This guide includes no blue-hole swim, jump, cave dive, camp or trail visit. A general island tourism description does not override the closure notice.

Exuma Cays protected habitats and operator checks

Exumas

Distinguish Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park from a general Exuma island-hopping package. Bahamas National Trust describes protected reefs, mangroves, seagrasses and island trails, with headquarters at Warderick Wells. It states that fishing, shelling and conching are not permitted within the park. A boat excursion must be planned with current park rules, a suitable operator, sea conditions, safety equipment and a return plan; the operator's phrase about safe anchorages is not a forecast or assurance for your vessel. The park also warns that its remote office can be difficult to contact. No mooring, landing, wildlife encounter or boat departure is reserved. Do not enter baited water; FCDO warns about shark risks and poorly regulated water sports. This card includes no swimming-pig trip, fishing or coral collection.

Lucayan forest and cave viewpoints, not cave swimming

Grand Bahama

Choose Lucayan National Park as a Grand Bahama forest, mangrove and heritage lead. Bahamas National Trust describes boardwalks and trails, cave viewing platforms and preserved evidence of the Indigenous Lucayan people; treat the caves as cultural and ecological sites, not adventure equipment. The official tourism page says cave swimming is prohibited and diving requires a special permit. This starter includes neither. Check current park opening, guide arrangements, path condition and access needs with the Trust before travelling. Its later expansion means the older tourism acreage is not used here. Gold Rock Beach is a separate shore setting, not proof of safe swimming conditions. No cave entry beyond authorised visitor areas, underwater exploration, kayak, beach swim or current tour availability is guaranteed.

Great Inagua bird conservation requires arranged access

Great Inagua

Research Inagua National Park on Great Inagua, keeping it distinct from Little Inagua and from the Nassau or Grand Bahama bases. Bahamas National Trust explains its role in protecting West Indian flamingos and other birds, and lists little infrastructure or trail development. The Trust says travel dates can be confirmed with its New Providence or Inagua office. Arrange current access and an appropriate local guide before making a trip; verify inter-island transport, accommodation, heat, supplies and return options separately. No flight, road route, warden escort or flamingo sighting is guaranteed. Observe birds at a distance without approaching nests or disturbing colonies. The page's population estimate is not a live count and is omitted here. No salt-company entry, off-road expedition or wildlife handling is included.

Bahamian art at the National Art Gallery

New Providence

Choose the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas in Villa Doyle as a focused Nassau cultural visit. The museum and tourism authority describe historic and contemporary Bahamian art in a restored colonial-era house. Its museum-map page distinguishes the national collection and temporary-exhibition spaces; pick the work or exhibition you want and then check current displays, admission, photography and access needs. The homepage contains shows dated 2024, so this guide does not present those as exhibitions open today. A historic house layout is not proof that every floor is step-free. Confirm with the gallery before selecting a route through the building. A concert, workshop or Junkanoo event is a separate plan. No named artwork, free-admission eligibility, public programme or gallery opening is guaranteed.
